American Tourist Arrested in Phuket for Possession of ADHD Medication

PHUKET — May 5, 2025 — A 27-year-old American tourist was arrested in Kamala, Kathu district, for possession of five pills of methylphenidate, a controlled psychotropic substance in Thailand commonly used to treat ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

The arrest occurred after Kamala traffic police stopped the man for riding a motorcycle without a license plate. A search of his shoulder bag uncovered the pills, leading to immediate charges for unauthorized possession of a Category 2 psychotropic substance.

Under Thai narcotics law, methylphenidate is strictly regulated. Possession without official approval from the Ministry of Public Health is a criminal offense, regardless of medical prescriptions issued abroad.

The Narcotics Control Division of the Thai FDA classifies methylphenidate as a high-risk drug for abuse. Foreigners are frequently warned that medications legal in their home countries may be banned or require special permits in Thailand.

The tourist is now facing legal proceedings, and his case may involve penalties ranging from fines to jail time, depending on the court’s judgment.

Travelers are strongly advised to consult Thai authorities or embassies before bringing any prescription medication into the country, particularly those involving stimulants, painkillers, or anti-anxiety drugs.
