AOT plans out the expansion of Don Mueang airport

Don Mueang Airport’s ambitious six-year expansion plan has been made public by Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT). With an anticipated investment of 36.83 billion baht, the capital investment plan, which was authorized by the Cabinet, aims to create the third phase of Don Mueang International Airport. Currently in the design stage, the project is anticipated to invite bids in 2024, with work starting in 2025.

By 2029, the new facilities are expected to be fully operational. The main goals of the Don Mueang Airport expansion plan are to increase passenger traffic capacity, improve service quality for ground and air transportation systems, increase efficiency, and lessen congestion inside the airport. The airport can currently handle 30 million people a year.

A third passenger terminal will be built, offering 160,000 square meters of usable area for travelers from abroad, to accommodate an additional 50 million people annually. With a combined useable area of up to 240,000 square meters, the current passenger terminals 1 and 2 will be refurbished to accommodate domestic travelers, effectively converting Don Mueang Airport into a fully functional domestic aviation hub.

Six sections will make up the development plan. These include developing operational zones, aircraft parking bays, and public utility systems, as well as building Passenger Terminal 3, expanding the northern concourse, and building Passenger Terminal 3.

The airport authority strives to improve passenger services by employing creative ideas in addition to infrastructural improvements. These consist of baggage tray automatic return systems (ARTS), common-use bag drop machines (CUBD), and self-check-in kiosks (CUSS). According to current projections, passenger numbers will gradually increase and reach 95 million by the end of this year.

According to AOT, the population will increase and reach 200 million by 2027. The International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) prognosis, which anticipates a recovery to pre-Covid levels of worldwide travel between 2023 and 2024, is consistent with these projections.
