AOT to fix escalators after incident at Don Mueang airport

AOT (Airports of Thailand) has formed a committee to look into a recent incident involving a moving walkway at one of its airports that left a passenger with a serious leg injury.

The committee, which consists of officials from the Ministry of Transport, the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT), the Engineers Council, Siam Hitachi Company, and the victim’s family, has been given a 15-day deadline to complete the probe. The incident happened on June 29 when a travelator at the airport caused the passenger to fall, badly hurting her left leg. In response, AOT Director Kerati Kijmanawat declared that the committee will consider whether moving walkways older than 20 to 25 years old at all six AOT airports, including Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, and Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai, may be replaced.

All 20 of the airport’s moving walkways have been temporarily taken out of service in the wake of the tragedy. The walkways will gradually resume use after a comprehensive assessment and any required modifications, a procedure that is anticipated to take about a month.

Even though some of the travelators are more than 27 years old, Director Kerati underlined that routine maintenance has been done on them. He did add that the group will look into replacing those who were older than 15-20 years as well as study the use of new technology, such as sensors, to improve safety measures.

Pol Col Adirek Tongkeamkeaw, the superintendent of the Don Mueang police, said that while they are awaiting the results of forensic tests, investigators are now questioning people connected to the case. To ascertain whether the accident was the result of negligence, the airport’s CCTV footage is also being examined.
