The Rattanakosin Island canal Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem is bordered by roughly 110 stalls that are unlawfully set up on the sidewalks. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has started to remove these stalls. The goal of removing these stalls is to improve the overall beauty of the canal landscape and free up the pavement for pedestrian use.
By transferring about 2,000 vendors, the BMA was able to decrease the number of illegally occupied pavements from 791 last year to 692 this year. With the help of the Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Pathumwan, and Dusit district offices, alternative trading locations have been set up close to Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem.
In an effort to link the promenade with Khlong Bang Lamphu and Khlong Khu Muang, the BMA has also presented plans to redesign the promenade along the banks of Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem.
For the impending construction projects, which should be finished by the end of July, the Department of Lands has been entrusted with surveying the area adjacent to the canal. The BMA has highlighted other plans to enhance Rattanakosin Island, the historic center of Bangkok’s Old Town, in addition to the promenade upgrade. These include extending the electric commuter boat route that now runs down Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem and improving Khlong Lot to allow for larger boats to pass under the Khlong Bangkok Noi bridge.
The project is anticipated to improve local tourism and increase the number of travelers using the electric boat route, which started running regularly in March after ceasing in 2022. The electric boats are now in regular operation, with services operating every hour on weekends between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM and every 20 minutes during the week.
The BMA anticipates a rise in demand for private boat tours along Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem to Khlong Maha Nak in Bang Lamphu once the promenade is finished. To better advertise the canal area, the agency also intends to hold a winter festival along the canal in December.
