BMA to complete demolishing of Phadung Krung Kasem canal stalls in 2 days

Using a backhoe and other heavy machinery, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is hastening the destruction of stalls that were erected illegally along a sidewalk next to the Phadung Krung Kasem Canal.

The job will be finished in two more days, according to Deputy Bangkok Governor Jakkapan Piwngarm, who stated this morning (Tuesday), after which the reclaimed pavement would be repaired and embellished with flowerbeds and floor murals.

He said that after consulting with their representatives and district officials, the municipal administration will not permit merchants to operate on the recovered pavements once more and will instead find alternative areas for them.

He revealed that some of the stalls had been established as long-term structures on the pavement and that the vendors were reluctance to leave despite repeated warnings. Several vendors from the Bobae and Maha Nak markets have been relocated, according to Worachon Thavornpong, the district’s chief officer. However, the vendors on the sidewalks next to the canal have resisted removal until the city government took drastic measures.

Finally, he said, many suppliers did consent to leave.

Last year, there were 692 unlawfully occupied pavement pieces, down from 791 the previous year when the city administration moved roughly 2,000 vendors.

With the assistance of the Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Pathumwan, and Dusit district offices, alternative trading locations have been set up for some of the Phadung Krung Kasem Canal sellers.
