Call for Thai Government to Reevaluate Restrictions on US Imports

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra revealed that he has been in contact with individuals close to US President Donald Trump to discuss tariff issues between Thailand and the United States.

On Sunday, Thaksin emphasized the necessity of national unity and the importance of strategic preparation to address various “external factors,” such as trade wars and tariff barriers. He noted that amid global economic pressures, domestic cooperation is more vital than ever, advocating for a forward-looking and constructive mindset, as national strength stems from unity.

When asked if he would engage directly with Mr. Trump regarding tariffs, Thaksin mentioned he has already communicated with several of Trump’s associates.

Thaksin expressed optimism about the potential for negotiation, highlighting the need for Thailand to reassess unnecessary trade barriers on US imports, particularly those that do not negatively affect domestic industries. For example, he suggested that Thailand might consider revising tariffs on US-made luxury motorcycles, as they cater to a limited consumer base.

As an adviser to the ASEAN chair, he noted the importance of ASEAN collaborating with the European Union to establish a free trade agreement between the two regions. He cautioned that trade barriers could hinder economic growth and employment in developing countries, urging ASEAN to negotiate effectively with advanced economies. He recommended that Thailand solidify its domestic position before entering negotiations with the US.

When questioned about a potential direct meeting with Mr. Trump, Thaksin said that Thai government representatives should initiate discussions with him first, although he indicated he would participate in the negotiations if the opportunity arose.

Last week, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira announced plans for a Thai delegation to travel to the US to negotiate with the US Trade Representative once Thailand’s proposals are finalized. Key discussion points will include addressing the trade surplus between Thailand and the US and the removal of certain non-tariff barriers on US imports. Minister Pichai also mentioned that stricter controls regarding certificates of origin will be a focal point, especially in light of trade deficits with China.
