Casino Bill Faces Significant Obstacles

The future of the casino-entertainment complex bill is uncertain after the Pheu Thai-led government decided to delay its push for approval due to strong opposition. The bill has been postponed until the next parliamentary session starting July 2, and observers doubt its chances of passing, especially after Bhumjaithai Party’s secretary-general expressed opposition.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul attempted to downplay concerns within the coalition, but some senators affiliated with Bhumjaithai are also expected to oppose the bill. Critics outside the parliament have threatened protests if the bill proceeds, warning that it could harm Pheu Thai’s electoral prospects.

The initial reading of the bill was slated for April 9, but the government’s attempt to expedite its deliberation faced backlash. Opponents call for the bill’s cancellation rather than a mere postponement, citing concerns about ethics and potential constitutional violations. There have been calls for a referendum to gauge public opinion on legalizing casinos, as many are worried about the negative impacts.

Political experts suggest that if the coalition partners refuse to back the bill when parliament reconvenes, the government may have to withdraw it. Widespread resistance stems from moral and ethical concerns, with various non-political groups also voicing opposition.

Despite this, some analysts believe the bill could eventually pass, as Pheu Thai may negotiate with coalition partners and utilize state mechanisms to manage protests. If the bill is rejected, it’s expected that similar proposals will emerge in the future to address economic challenges.
