City Hall launches expanded initiative to renovate pedestrian walkways.

Bangkok has successfully renovated 700 kilometers of its walkways, with plans for an additional 1,000 kilometers to be upgraded by next year, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

BMA spokesman Aekvarunyoo Amrapala recently reviewed the progress of a walkway project connecting Phran Nok Market in the Bangkok Noi district to Itsaraphap MRT Station in Bangkok Yai. This 4-kilometer footpath initiative, which began last June, links the three districts of Bangkok Noi, Bangkok Yai, and Thon Buri and implements Universal Design principles to enhance accessibility for the public.

The renovated walkways are designed to be more durable and safer, featuring non-slip surfaces and refurbishments that reflect the cultural essence of the area. Approximately 180 street food stalls have been relocated to the market or other designated areas, Mr. Aekvarunyoo noted.

This project is part of the BMA’s four-year plan to revamp 1,000 kilometers of walkways by 2026, of which about 70% has already been completed. By next month, 87 pavements will be fully upgraded, totaling 774 kilometers.

The BMA is emphasizing improvements to walkways because 60% of Bangkok residents rely on walking to access the public transportation system, he explained.

In high-foot-traffic areas such as Phloenchit, Silom, Lang Suan, and Yaowarat, the BMA has reinforced footpaths with 10-centimeter-thick concrete for added stability.

The overall enhancements include the removal of unnecessary street furniture, installation of new drainage systems, and leveling shop entrances and exits to align with the footpaths for improved safety, Mr. Aekvarunyoo added.

Meanwhile, renovations of the footpaths adjacent to Klong Toey Market on Rama IV Road are ongoing, following the relocation of street food vendors to designated areas by March 16.

On Tuesday, a BMA team cleaned the walkways in front of the market to prepare for the upcoming repair phase. Upgrades to the area’s aesthetics are set to begin in June and will take approximately 120 days.

Vendors at Klong Toey Market have also been instructed not to extend their stalls onto the walkways to ensure pedestrian convenience.
