Collapse plate caused the escalator incident at Don Meaung airport

At Don Mueang airport last month, a woman fell and lost her leg due to a collapsed plate on a moving walkway, according to Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT).

The moving walkway between Gates 4 and 5 of the second domestic terminal had a problem when one of its metal plates fell loose from its frame, leaving a hole, according to an investigation, AOT president Kerati Kijmanawat said on Wednesday.

Accordingly, a traveler fell into the device and suffered significant injuries, according to Mr. Kerati, who was referring to the June 29 event that occurred at 8.21 am. A 57-year-old woman who was preparing to travel to Nakhon Si Thammarat was the casualty.

Before being transported to a local hospital, the woman had the emergency amputation of her left leg above the knee performed by medical personnel at the site.

Later, she was brought to the Bumrungrad Medical Center for additional surgery and care. Her family announced that they would complain to the police about the airport manager.

At Don Mueang, all 20 moving walkways were taken out of operation pending inspections and repairs.

Mr. Kerati expressed regret for the occurrence and pledged that AOT will pay for the woman’s medical bills and provide the greatest compensation possible.

Twenty moving walkways were erected at Don Mueang Airport by Hitachi Co. of Japan in 1996, and since then, Siam Hitachi, the airport’s authorized local dealer, has performed routine maintenance, according to past statements made by airport management.
