Deadly Earthquake Forces Thai Patients into Sports Hall

Bangkok, Thailand – A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on Friday afternoon forced Thai hospitals to evacuate patients for safety concerns, with some seeking refuge in a sports hall turned into a makeshift ward.

Powerful Tremors Felt in Bangkok

The quake, followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock, sent shockwaves over 1,000 kilometers south to Bangkok, shaking high-rise buildings and causing panic.

The disaster’s worst impact was in Myanmar, where the junta reported at least 1,002 deaths and nearly 2,400 injuries. In Bangkok, at least 10 fatalities were confirmed.

A 30-storey government building under construction became a scene of chaos, with people fleeing in cars and on foot. Video footage captured a high-rise hotel swaying, as water from its rooftop pool spilled over the edges.

Hospital Evacuations and Makeshift Medical Care

At Rajavithi Hospital, patients were rushed out of the building amid fears of structural damage. Some were moved to the hospital’s canteen and sports hall, where they received basic medical care, including blood transfusions.

One leukemia patient, who had to walk down multiple flights of stairs with the help of nurses, expressed concern about receiving urgent blood platelet treatment at another facility.

By Saturday morning, around 30 patients remained in the hall, while others were relocated to different hospitals.

Fear and Community Support

Many Bangkok residents spent the night outdoors, fearing aftershocks. Some set up tents in parks, while others slept under trees in open spaces.

Meanwhile, volunteers stepped in to assist. Panadda Wongphudee, an actress and former Miss Thailand, distributed refreshments to rescue workers aiding in relief efforts.

Authorities continue to assess building damage and safety risks, as residents brace for possible aftershocks.
