Dengue fever in Thailand surging

With 27,377 recorded cases and 33 fatalities during the first half of this year, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has disclosed that the number of dengue fever cases in Thailand has tripled. This number is three times more than it was during the same time last year, according to hospital records.

The DDC reported that just between June 1 and June 28, 1,500 to 2,400 people contracted dengue, with up to three of them dying. Children aged 5 to 14 were the age group that the virus afflicted the most, followed by those aged 15 to 24. The South, Bangkok, and the Central Region were the areas with the greatest number of cases. Aedes mosquitoes, which are frequently found in and around inhabited areas, transmit four different virus types that cause dengue disease by their bite.

High temperature (40°C/104°F), severe headache, eye pain, joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash are among the usual symptoms of dengue fever. The DDC has started awareness-raising efforts that are being coordinated by community volunteers, regional governments, and the commercial sector to stop the spread of dengue.

In order to inform kids on how to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, these efforts specifically target schools. Officials from the DDC underlined the significance of timely medical attention for people who have had a high fever for longer than two days, noting that this can assist evaluate whether the symptoms are associated with dengue and lower the likelihood of the virus’s devastating effects.
