F1 in Talks to Stage Bangkok Grand Prix
Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali recently met with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to discuss plans for a potential street-circuit Grand Prix in Bangkok.
The Thai government has announced plans to commission a feasibility study to assess the possibility of hosting the race in the capital starting in 2028. While Thailand already has an FIA-accredited racetrack in Buriram, located in the northeast, the focus is on bringing F1 to the heart of Bangkok.
Domenicali praised the proposed plans as “impressive,” while Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasized the broad economic benefits of hosting an F1 race. “I believe that all Thai people will benefit from organising this event, whether it is large-scale infrastructure investment, job creation, new income generation, or importing new technologies and innovations,” she stated.
Currently, the F1 calendar features 24 races, including four in the Asia-Pacific region. If approved, a Bangkok Grand Prix would further expand Formula 1’s presence in Asia and solidify Thailand’s position on the global motorsport stage.
