Flying Tuna Injures Thai Trucker in Surreal Pier Mishap
SAMUT PRAKAN — In what rescue workers are calling one of the most bizarre accidents they’ve ever encountered, a 41-year-old truck driver was struck on the head by a 40-kilogram frozen tuna that fell from a Korean cargo ship, leaving him bloodied but conscious.
The incident occurred around 12pm on May 7 at Suphanawa Pier, Lock 6, in Songkhonong subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng district. The driver, Prayot, was standing beside his parked 10-wheel truck when the massive fish plummeted from above, possibly during the unloading of 3,000 tonnes of frozen tuna from a nearby ship.
Witnesses called the Por Tek Tung Foundation, who arrived to find Prayot lying on the ground with a 5-centimetre gash on his head, caused by the unexpected fish impact. He was alert and able to respond to questions, dressed in a black and yellow shirt, blue trousers, and matching socks.
He was rushed to Bangchak Hospital for further treatment after first aid was administered at the scene.
Authorities are investigating how exactly the frozen fish fell from the ship. While workplace accidents involving cargo are not uncommon, a falling tuna knock-out is certainly a rarity—even by pier-side standards.
