Indigo Airlines orders 500 Airbus A320NEOS at the Paris Airshow

500 Airbus A320neo planes will be delivered between 2030 and 2035, according to an order placed by Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo.

During the Paris Air Show on June 19, 2023, the agreement was declared. With 1,330 Airbus A320neo aircraft already on IndiGo’s backlog, it is the greatest single aircraft order in the history of the industry.

The airline still hasn’t decided exactly how many Airbus A320neo and A321neo planes it will operate.

Every order is final and without substitutions.

It is challenging to overestimate the importance of IndiGo’s recent, historic deal for 500 Airbus A320 Family airplanes. IndiGo’s ability to carry out its purpose to support economic growth, social cohesion, and mobility in India is made possible by an order book of approximately 1000 aircraft, which extends into the next ten years, according to Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo.

Elbers previously expressed reluctance to confirm rumors that the low-cost carrier was seeking to place an order of this size, declaring at the IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Istanbul, Turkey that he would refrain from commenting on “any speculations or any drivel.” In his words, “a steady flow of planes coming in” was already happening for IndiGo.

Prior to the deal for 500 aircraft, the airline had placed orders for 490 aircraft, including 11 ATR 72-600s and two Airbus A321 P2F (passenger-to-freighter) converted freighters. At present, it runs 315 aircraft, of which 165 are Airbus A320neos and 85 are A321neos.

“This historic purchase opens a new chapter in Airbus and IndiGo’s partnership, which is democratizing accessible, cheap air travel for millions of people in the aviation industry’s fastest-growing market in the world. Additionally, it is a strong testament to the A320 Family’s best-in-class operational economics, which have been fueling IndiGo’s expansion for almost 20 years, according to Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus.
