In the footage, a young monkey is seen grabbing a bright blue phone with its paw, eyeing both the phone and the owner— a French woman in pink clothing— before scurrying off into a tree.
Although the tourist was initially worried about her phone, she couldn’t help but laugh at the monkey’s playful behavior. The video showed the monkey taking a selfie, flipping the camera to film its surroundings, and entertaining viewers with its antics. Fortunately, a group of three Thai men stepped in and managed to retrieve the phone from the cheeky monkey.
At the end of the video, the tourist, still laughing, was seen sitting on the footpath when another monkey—possibly the same one—playfully pulled her hair from behind. A Thai man in a red shirt quickly intervened, chasing the monkey away before it could harm her.
The French tourist later used the monkey’s selfie as her profile picture, and the video became a hit with Thai TikTok users, sparking amusing comments such as, “OMG, your profile!” and “The monkey wants to go viral.” Some joked, “The monkey did its make-up,” while others marveled at its video skills.
The incident took place at Khao Toh Sae in Phuket’s Ratsada sub-district, a popular spot known for its beautiful sunset views and playful monkeys. While the tourists were lucky to recover their phone and escape unscathed, the situation was a reminder of a recent incident where a Swedish tourist was bitten by a monkey in Lop Buri, requiring medical treatment.
