Pattaya Woman Severely Injures Herself After Losing ฿800,000 to Call Scam
PATTAYA, April 6, 2025 — A 35-year-old Pattaya businesswoman is in critical condition after reportedly stabbing herself multiple times in a moment of emotional crisis caused by a devastating call center scam that cost her ฿800,000.
Emergency responders and police were called to a house on Arunothai 9 Road at around 12:16 a.m. Sunday morning. There, they found the woman with approximately 10 self-inflicted stab wounds to her neck, abdomen, and left wrist, lying in a pool of blood. She was given first aid on-site and immediately rushed to hospital.
At the scene, authorities recovered a blood-stained knife attached to a keychain, believed to be the weapon used in the incident.
A relative told police that the distressing ordeal began about a year ago, when a scam gang posing as police officers from Chon Buri contacted the woman. The scammers falsely accused her of being involved in prostitution-related crimes and told her that her finances were under investigation. They demanded that she transfer funds to them for “verification purposes.”
Fearing legal consequences, she complied, ultimately transferring ฿800,000 — a sum that included money she had borrowed from friends and family. After realizing she had been deceived, she filed a report with the police. However, efforts to recover the money have failed, leaving her in deep financial and emotional distress.
The incident underscores the devastating psychological toll such scams can have on victims, even months or years after the event.
Authorities continue to warn the public to stay vigilant and verify any suspicious calls, especially those involving threats of legal action or demands for money.
