PM Paetongtarn Defends Casino Complex Plan, Blames Political Rivals for Stirring Public Confusion
BANGKOK — May 5, 2025 — Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has come out strongly in defense of the proposed casino entertainment complex, pushing back against growing public criticism and accusing her political opponents of misrepresenting the project to sow confusion.
Speaking on the government broadcast “Empowering Thais with PM Paetongtarn,” the premier assured viewers that the initiative is aimed at boosting foreign investment and generating economic growth—without the use of public funds.
“This project is not funded by taxpayers,” Paetongtarn said. “It will rely solely on private and foreign investment, with the goal of generating tax revenue through a regulated gaming environment.”
Drawing comparisons to Singapore’s successful model, she emphasized that the development is not merely a casino but a multi-purpose complex that would include hotels, convention centers, concert halls, and entertainment facilities, with the casino being a regulated component.
She also addressed concerns over social impact, promising strict safeguards including background checks, security protocols, and responsible gambling measures. Paetongtarn warned that misleading narratives, driven by political agendas, were distorting the public’s understanding of the project.
“Some groups are trying to paint this as a descent into vice,” she stated. “But in reality, it’s a regulated, well-planned opportunity to strengthen Thailand’s position as a global tourism and entertainment hub.”
The casino complex proposal remains a hot-button issue, sparking debate over potential social costs versus economic gains. The government insists public hearings and detailed studies will continue before any final decisions are made.
