PM Paetongtarn Heads to Northeast Thailand to Tackle Trade, Tourism, and Drug Issues
NAKHON PHANOM — Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is leading her cabinet to the northeastern provinces of Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, and Mukdahan on April 29–30 to address major local challenges ahead of a key mobile cabinet meeting.
The two-day mission will focus on cross-border trade, tourism development, water resource management, and drug suppression efforts along the Mekong River.
Highlights of her trip include:
- Inspecting a major water rehabilitation project at Don Koen Park in Sakon Nakhon.
- Visiting a sustainable fashion handicraft center in Nawa district, Nakhon Phanom.
- Chairing a meeting on drug trafficking control with the Mekong Riverine Unit.
- Presiding over the mobile cabinet meeting at Nakhon Phanom University.
- Reviewing cross-border trade operations at key customs checkpoints along the Laos border.
Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said the visit aims to fast-track development efforts in these border provinces, enhance trade and tourism links with Laos and Vietnam, and tackle drug trafficking to improve residents’ quality of life.
“Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan are strategically important,” he noted. “With better connectivity and security, they can become gateways for investment and tourism growth.”
