Powerful Myanmar Earthquake Unleashes Energy Equivalent to 334 Atomic Bombs, Aftershocks Expected for Months
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, releasing an energy force equivalent to 334 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs, according to geologist Dr. Jess Phoenix.
The catastrophic quake, centered near Mandalay, has left widespread destruction across Myanmar and Thailand, with experts warning that aftershocks could persist for up to three months.
Massive Energy Release & Fault Line Activity
Dr. Phoenix explained that the earthquake resulted from the collision of the Indian tectonic plate with the Eurasian plate, which remains an active seismic zone.
✅ The Sagaing Fault, a major tectonic boundary running north-south through Myanmar, was the rupture point.
✅ The quake’s shallow depth (10 km) amplified its destructive force.
✅ A 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed just 12 minutes later, with at least 14 more recorded since.
According to Dr. Roberto Gentile, an earthquake risk expert from University College London, the Sagaing Fault has a history of producing up to magnitude 8 earthquakes, including a 7.7-magnitude quake in 1946.
“This fault continues to release stress, meaning aftershocks of magnitude 6 or higher could still occur,” said Dr. Gentile.
Destruction & Emergency Response
The earthquake has devastated Myanmar, with reports of:
🛑 Collapsed buildings in Mandalay and Naypyidaw.
🛑 Roads buckling, causing transport disruption.
🛑 A major bridge collapse over the Irrawaddy River, complicating rescue efforts.
🛑 Hospitals overwhelmed with casualties.
Myanmar’s military junta has declared a state of emergency in Naypyidaw and six states, accepting international aid from India and ASEAN. The United Nations has pledged $5 million in emergency support.
Rescue efforts remain slow, with civil war conditions hampering progress. Many trapped victims are still awaiting help.
Impact in Thailand
The quake’s tremors were felt across Thailand, including Bangkok, where Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared an area of emergency.
Seismologists stress the risk of further tremors, urging preparedness in both Myanmar and neighboring countries.
