Rayong Man Sentenced to Home Detention for Assaulting Nurse

RAYONG, Thailand – A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to home detention and fined for slapping a nurse at Rayong Hospital after she refused to allow his daughter to visit her ailing grandmother in the ICU.

The Rayong Provincial Court handed down the sentence on Wednesday to the man, identified only as Sanpong, who worked at an industrial estate.

The incident occurred on the night of February 16 when Sanpong requested that his young daughter be allowed to visit her grandmother, who was being treated for influenza. The nurse denied the request, citing the risk of infection. Frustrated, Sanpong slapped her twice in the face, an act captured by hospital security cameras.

During the trial, Sanpong admitted to assaulting a government official on duty, stating that he lost his temper due to the nurse’s tone. Because he confessed, the court reduced his initial three-month jail sentence to one month and 15 days, allowing him to serve it outside of prison.

Additionally, he was ordered to pay 77,273 baht in compensation to the nurse. Sanpong placed 60,000 baht in cash as bail and intends to appeal the verdict.
