Sky-High Solutions: New Overpasses Set to Ease Bangkok’s Traffic Woes

Bangkok, Thailand – Relief may finally be on the horizon for Bangkok commuters as the Transport Ministry unveils an ambitious plan to combat the capital’s chronic traffic congestion by constructing a network of new overpasses across the city and surrounding provinces.

The initiative, aimed at improving traffic flow during peak hours, targets several gridlock-prone areas and is part of a broader strategy to modernize the capital’s transportation infrastructure.

Phongkawin Jungrungreangkit, an adviser to the transport minister, said the overpasses are intended to “improve traffic flow in areas frequently affected by traffic jams, particularly during peak hours.”

The Department of Highways (DoH) and the Department of Rural Roads will jointly manage the construction and coordination of the projects.

Among the first projects nearing completion is the overpass on the Bang Khun Tian–Ekkachai section of Highway No. 35 (Thon Buri–Pak Tor), set to finish construction next month with a trial run planned by year’s end.

Work is also underway on two major flyovers—designated No. 3901 and 3902—that will span the Chao Phraya River, connecting Pathum Thani and Ayutthaya provinces. These are expected to be completed by August 2026.

Meanwhile, the flyover at the busy intersection of highways No. 3 and No. 3256 in Samut Prakan is scheduled for completion by February 2026.

The Department of Rural Roads is also pushing forward with three overpass projects in areas just outside Bangkok, signaling a comprehensive effort to tackle one of the city’s most pressing urban challenges.
