Steel Cable Falls From Rama II Expressway Construction, Damages Two Vehicles
SAMUT SAKHON — A steel cable fell from an under-construction expressway onto Rama II Road in the early hours of Tuesday, damaging a pickup truck and a trailer truck, though no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near kilometre marker 27 in Tha Sai subdistrict, Muang district, according to Pol Capt Suraphol Wichit of Muang Police Station. The two damaged vehicles — a Bangkok-registered pickup and a trailer truck from Prachuap Khiri Khan — were heading inbound to Bangkok when the cable fell from above.
Construction workers at the scene said a sling rotor being used to lift and position a concrete slab suddenly broke mid-operation, causing the sling reel and steel cable to drop onto the road, striking both vehicles.
Police confirmed that the construction contractor will be held responsible for the damages.
The incident follows a string of safety failures linked to the expressway project along Rama II Road. Just last week, concrete chunks from an old flyover fell and crashed through a pickup truck windshield, fatally injuring the driver.
The ongoing construction, which has suffered multiple delays and repeated accidents, continues to draw criticism for endangering motorists. Calls for improved safety protocols and stricter oversight are growing louder as the public demands accountability.
