According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), China is expected to bring in 3.4 million to 3.5 million tourists to Thailand this year, falling short of the target. Despite implementing a visa-free program to attract Chinese tourists, only 3.01 million have visited Thailand so far in 2023.
China has historically been a significant market for Thailand’s tourism industry, accounting for more than a quarter of all arrivals in 2019. However, concerns about China’s slowing economy and the recent mall shooting in Bangkok have impacted tourist confidence.
The TAT had initially expected 4 million to 4.4 million Chinese visitors this year, which was later revised down to 5 million by the government. The overall foreign tourist arrivals for the year stand at around 23.88 million, with the government aiming for 28 million arrivals.
