Thailand Approves Online Driving Licence Renewals for Eligible Drivers
In a move aimed at reducing red tape and enhancing public convenience, the Thai Cabinet has approved a draft ministerial directive that will allow eligible drivers to renew their driving licences online—without the need for physical tests.
The Transport Ministry’s proposal, approved on April 22, marks a major step forward in digitalising Thailand’s transport services and is expected to roll out in the coming months.
Deputy government spokesman Karom Polpornklang announced that the change will not only save drivers valuable time but also cut travel-related expenses by eliminating the need for in-person visits to the Department of Land Transport (DLT).
What We Know So Far:
- Drivers in normal physical condition will be able to renew their licences electronically.
- Reaction time and eyesight tests will no longer be required for those who qualify.
- The DLT Director-General will set the specific age and physical fitness criteria for eligibility.
- The new system will officially take effect 90 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.
For Drivers Who Don’t Qualify:
Those who do not meet the eligibility criteria—once defined—will still be required to:
- Take reaction time and eyesight tests.
- Complete a mandatory training course.
This policy supports the government’s broader goal to modernise public services and create a more efficient, user-friendly system for citizens. Many drivers are now awaiting further announcements to learn if they qualify for the upcoming hassle-free online renewal option.
