Thailand Tightens Airport Security with New Liquid Rules for Hand Luggage

BANGKOK, Thailand — As of April 22, 2025, new nationwide rules are in effect for carrying liquids, gels, and aerosols (LGAs) through Thai airports, following a directive by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) aimed at boosting security protocols.

🚫 What’s Changed?

Under the new regulations:

  • Each LGA item must be 100ml or less, and it must be stored in a container that is also no larger than 100mleven if the container isn’t full.
  • Passengers may carry up to 1 litre of LGAs in total.
  • All items must be stored in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag and presented separately at security checkpoints.
  • These items are not counted against a passenger’s carry-on luggage allowance.

🧴 What Counts as an LGA?

The list includes:

  • Beverages, sauces
  • Cosmetics and toiletries (e.g. mascara, foundation, lip balm)
  • Sprays, foams, and pressurized containers

Even items that combine solid and liquid components are included.

✅ Exemptions & Special Cases

Passengers may carry LGAs beyond the 100ml rule only if they fall under these categories:

  • Medications with supporting documentation
  • Baby food or milk
  • Medically necessary dietary items

Airport staff, airline crew, and emergency personnel are allowed to carry necessary LGAs as long as they comply with security screening.

🛍️ Duty-Free Rules

  • Allowed if sealed in tamper-evident bags
  • Must be accompanied by proof of purchase
  • Transfer/transit passengers must present these items for inspection

🛫 What to Expect at the Airport

  • Airports are now required to display the updated LGA rules in public areas.
  • Enhanced screening technology (like advanced X-ray scanners) may speed up checks at some airports.
  • Stricter enforcement is possible based on local security conditions.

✈️ Pro Tip: Check Ahead

Before flying, double-check both Thai regulations and those at your destination to avoid delays or confiscation of items.
