Thaksin returning to Thailand on 10th August

After 17 years of self-imposed exile, the wanted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is expected to return to Thailand on August 10, his youngest daughter Paetongtarn revealed on Wednesday.

On her father’s 74th birthday, she made her revelation.

19 times so far, Thaksin has delayed his arrival. He had promised to come back this month so he could share his birthday with his grandchildren. For the first time, he even asserted that he is prepared to face the repercussions of his actions in court.

After being overthrown in a coup in 2006, Thaksin has been living in self-imposed exile ever since. The Criminal Division for Holders of Political Office of the Supreme Court condemned him to a total of 12 years in prison in four cases while he was away.

The 26th of July, according to Paetongtarn, is a significant day for her every year. She claimed that she herself was unable to comprehend that her adored father is returning home this year.

“My family and I are thrilled and concerned at the same time, but we accept his decision. God bless you, and may He grant you strength and safety. I want your hope to see your grandchildren off to school to come true, she wrote, adding, “For everyone who reads this, my father is a Thai and a (former) prime minister who is regarded to have done the most effort. He has experienced misfortune and has been gravely vilified.

If Thaksin truly does return home this time, the Thai government acknowledges that they have a plan in place to receive him.
