U.S. Commits to Launching Formal Tariff Talks with Thailand

U.S. Commits to Launching Formal Tariff Talks with Thailand

The United States has agreed to initiate official tariff negotiations with Thailand, announced Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.

Mr. Pichai shared the news in a brief video posted on Facebook on Saturday. In the video, he explained that Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa informed him that the U.S. has officially responded to Thailand by expressing its willingness to begin discussions on mutual trade and tariffs.

He noted that Thailand and the U.S. have previously engaged in informal talks on this subject, and he believes the proposals from Thailand would be mutually advantageous.

“This doesn’t mean we are starting from scratch. We have had informal discussions already. Our team has deliberated, and we believe the contents of those talks benefit both parties. I will continue to update on the progress of these official negotiations,” Mr. Pichai stated.

He did not specify a date for when the official negotiations will commence.

Thailand currently faces a 36% U.S. tariff if an agreement cannot be reached to reduce it before the upcoming moratorium deadline in July.
