Upon landing, a Cargolux Boeing 747-400 freighter sustains engine casing damage.

Before losing one of its left engines on the runway, the cargo made an attempt to land in Luxembourg.

After one of its left engines touched the tarmac, a Cargolux Boeing 747-400F traveling from Dubai Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) to Luxembourg Findel Airport (LUX) suffered only minimal damage. The pilots ordered a go-around, and on the second try, the aircraft successfully landed.

The flight, flying as CV-7545 out of Dubai, departed on April 15 at 14:10 and took a six-hour, 25-minute route back to Luxembourg. When the carrier tried to land at Findel, it grazed the runway, so the captain opted to abandon the landing and start a go-around. He reached 4,000 feet before making a second attempt to land. At 18:45, the airliner had successfully landed again.LX-ECV

The 14-year-old Boeing 747-400F(ER) flies under the registration LX-ECV, and according to Flightradar24, it was originally flying from Luxembourg to Taipei on a return flight when it was diverted to Dubai and then back to Europe. As anticipated, since the mishap, the aircraft has not yet recorded another flight. An all-Boeing 747 fleet of 30 aircraft is operated by Cargolux, one of the biggest cargo carriers in the world, which takes advantage of its strategic location in Europe between Germany, France, and Belgium to offer its cargo services to customers around the globe.

The event, which was witnessed by numerous people, was reported to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg’s Directorate of Civil Aviation (DAC), according to RTL. Cargolux reported that an internal investigation had been started. This remark was made public by the carrier:

The first landing attempt was aborted, and an additional turn was made. On the second try, they successfully landed. The first landing attempt resulted in damage to the aircraft, so it will stay on the ground while the required examinations and repairs are made.

There have not been any reported injuries.

A nice relief for the numerous aviation photographers and workers who observed the incident unfold is that the airline has also confirmed that neither a crew member on the aircraft nor any personnel on the ground were wounded.
