Vietnamese Woman Arrested for Bag Slashing Thefts During Songkran Festivities in Bangkok

A 42-year-old Vietnamese woman has been arrested in connection with a series of bag-slashing thefts targeting tourists and worshippers during Songkran celebrations in Bangkok.

The arrest took place at 2:30 AM today, following an intensive investigation by police, led by Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom. The suspect, identified only as Nguyen, was apprehended in a hotel room after being caught on CCTV footage committing theft at Wat Pho temple on April 12.

Stolen Items and Tools Seized

Items found in her possession included:

  • A Louis Vuitton handbag
  • A Samsung Galaxy A9 smartphone
  • Various foreign currencies, including U.S. dollars and Indonesian rupiah
  • A cutter knife
  • A copy of her passport
  • Clothes and shoes matching those seen in surveillance footage

Details of the Incident

A tourist filed a complaint at 11:25 AM on April 12, reporting that their bag had been slashed while praying at Wat Pho, and items worth about 3,000 baht (US$90), including credit cards, had been stolen. Investigation revealed the involvement of two suspects, who appeared to work as a team. The Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on the same day.

Police identified Nguyen at the hotel based on her distinctive features and surveillance footage. She later confessed to being Vietnamese and admitted entering Thailand illegally via Chanthaburi province after a previous deportation.

Legal Action and Public Advisory

Nguyen has been handed over to Phra Ratchawang Police Station for further legal proceedings. Efforts are underway to track down her accomplice.

Authorities are urging locals and tourists to remain cautious with their personal belongings, especially in crowded areas during the Songkran holiday.

“These types of crimes undermine the festive spirit and target the unsuspecting. We advise everyone to remain alert,” police stated.
