Yaowarat sparkles in 'Rockstar' music video.

The government has announced plans to enhance the promotion of Yaowarat and its surrounding areas to attract more international visitors following the release of a music video featuring Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban, set in the renowned Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Recently unveiled on Friday, the music video for Lisa’s new single ‘Rockstar’ quickly amassed 19.2 million views within just 11 hours of being posted on YouTube. The video gained widespread attention in Thailand, as it prominently showcased various scenes filmed along Bangkok’s Yaowarat Road, with Blackpink’s superstar singing and dancing in the heart of the capital’s famous Chinatown.

‘Rockstar’ made its global debut simultaneously worldwide, premiering on YouTube in Thailand at 7 am, following a teaser release earlier in the week. Released under RCA Records, the single highlights Lisa’s solo endeavors alongside her work with Blackpink.

Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thapanee Kiatphaibool, revealed intentions to not only spotlight Yaowarat, a well-visited destination, but also to promote neighboring areas like Sampheng Market, Talat Noi, Song Wat Road, and Wang Burapha through various social media platforms. The TAT aims to spotlight yearly events such as Chinese New Year and the Vegetarian Festival in these districts.

Describing the music video’s impact as a form of tourism promotion through the entertainment industry, Kiatphaibool stated that it enhances the country’s reputation, widens its reach, and raises awareness amongst a broader audience. The TAT plans to introduce innovative tourism offerings to attract more visitors, expecting local businesses to enhance their products and services to cater to the needs of international tourists.

Deputy government spokesperson Rudklao Intawong Suwankiri expressed confidence that Lisa’s music video will leverage her global fanbase to drive tourism in Thailand, particularly in the rejuvenation of Bangkok. Yaowarat, now a trending check-in location following the video, showcases the soft power of Thailand, aligning with government strategies.

Chamnan Srisawat, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, noted that Lisa’s latest video is anticipated to revitalize tourism in Bangkok, as fans worldwide are likely to follow her footsteps to explore these locations. Highlighting the surge in sales observed when Lisa promotes Thai products and brands, he emphasized the need for local authorities to maintain cleanliness and ensure tourists’ safety in these areas.

Srisawat emphasized the significant role of film production in enhancing tourism revenue, citing examples like Lisa’s video and the recent filming of the Jurassic Park franchise in Krabi, both of which garnered substantial attention.
