3rd Runway in Suvarnabhumi Airport to open in July

Suvarnabhumi new runway Bangkok one Feb 12 2024

Suvarnabhumi Airport is currently in the process of expanding to meet the growing demand for air travel, which includes building a third runway. Once this new runway is completed in July 2023, it is expected to increase the airport’s capacity by 30%, allowing it to handle up to 100 million passengers per year. This expansion aims to elevate the airport’s flight handling capacity to 94 flights per hour, up from the current 67, further solidifying Thailand’s position as a key aviation hub in the region.

The third runway will be the longest at Suvarnabhumi Airport, spanning 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), and will be accompanied by a new taxiway, apron, and additional passenger facilities. Additionally, it will have its own passenger terminal and other airport amenities. The recent inauguration of the Satellite 1 (SAT-1) passenger terminal has already begun to show positive results, with 13 airlines currently making use of the new facility. This has led to an increase in daily flights with the new terminal, reaching 86 flights per day. Officials anticipate this number to rise to 112 flights per day by the end of the month, indicating a successful integration of the new terminal into the airport’s overall operations.
