March 7, 2019 – 43 kg of heroin concealed in hilltribe-style jackets bound for Hong Kong were confiscated by the customs department.
According to Patchara Anuntasilpa, director-general of the Customs Department, the Airport Interdiction Task Force (AITF) recovered 43.4 kg of heroin on March 6 at Suvarnabhumi Airport, with a street value of 107.5 million baht.
29 suspicious packages containing clothing, accessories, and things for the home and body were declared. Six packages of jackets embellished with loincloths and ethnic fabric were scrutinized by officials. The sleeve cuffs had a pungent odor and were thicker than usual.
When the hems were taken off to be examined, patches of a white powdery substance were discovered sewn onto the sleeve cuffs. It came back as having heroin in it.
The Customs Department will collaborate with pertinent agencies to conduct additional research and make arrests of the offenders.
