The Bank of Thailand (BOT) swiftly addressed widespread public worries by clarifying that the proposed 50,000 baht daily transfer limit will not apply universally to all customers. The clarification came after reports suggested that the central bank planned to enforce a blanket transfer cap of 50,000 baht by 2025 to combat fraud and safeguard consumers.

Responding via its Facebook page on Wednesday, the BOT emphasized that there is no cause for alarm. Most customers will retain transfer limits aligned with their usual transaction habits. Those with regular transfers exceeding 50,000 baht will have higher limits assigned accordingly.

However, certain groups classified as high-risk—such as potential fraud suspects, customers with limited banking history, or those whose typical transfers are below 50,000 baht—will be subject to the 50,000 baht daily limit. Customers in these categories requiring urgent or larger transfers can contact their banks through mobile apps, call centers, or branch visits to request adjustments.

Special attention will be given to elderly customers, ensuring transfer limits reflect their typical activity. They can also request to keep their original limits if desired.

This initiative is part of the central bank’s broader effort to prevent financial fraud and protect consumers from increasingly sophisticated online scams.
