Flying in Luxury: Spotty the Dalmatian Sets the Standard for Canine Travel in Business Class.

By Lawrence Davis

Flying in style isn’t just for humans—Spotty, a Swiss Dalmatian, proves that dogs can enjoy the high life as well.

Earlier this month, Spotty, a four-year-old registered service dog, took a 5.5-hour flight from Singapore to Tokyo aboard Singapore Airlines’ Business Class. Throughout the journey, Spotty displayed impeccable manners and calm composure, earning admiration from fellow passengers. As a certified service dog, Spotty was eligible to travel in the cabin, adhering to Singapore Airlines’ strict policies.

Service Dog vs. Emotional Support Animal

  • Service Dogs: Trained to assist with specific tasks related to a disability, service dogs are allowed in public spaces, including airplanes, under strict laws.
  • Emotional Support Animals (ESAs): Provide comfort for mental health issues but lack specialized training and do not qualify for the same access, such as in-cabin travel with airlines.

Spotty’s journey was a perfect example of doggie travel etiquette. Sitting quietly throughout the flight, Spotty remained calm and relaxed—only occasionally wagging her tail or taking a nap. She quickly became a favorite among passengers for her poised demeanor.

The experience started at the airport lounge, where Spotty appeared completely at ease. Despite the new sights and sounds, she remained relaxed, even skipping breakfast. She didn’t request water until an hour before landing. When nature called, Spotty waited until they reached Tokyo, showcasing her well-trained nature.

Internet Fame and Admirers

Spotty’s journey didn’t just make waves in the skies—she became an internet sensation. A viral Instagram reel posted on February 9 captured her well-behaved travel style, amassing over 5.4 million views. Admirers flooded the comments, praising Spotty for her composed and gracious behavior.

Travel with Pets in Thailand

Traveling with pets has become easier in Thailand. On January 4, 2025, the State Railway of Thailand launched a pet-friendly Red Line train service in Bangkok, allowing dogs and cats to travel on weekends. Meanwhile, Grab Thailand’s “GRAB PET” service offers pet owners convenient options with prices based on the pet’s size.

Airlines are also accommodating pets:

  • Nok Air: Pets can travel as checked baggage on Boeing 737 flights.
  • Bangkok Airways: Allows pets as checked baggage.
  • Thai Airways: Has specific policies for service animals:
    • In Cabin: Escort dogs, such as guide dogs for the blind or hearing dogs for the deaf, travel free on all flights.
    • Service Dogs: Allowed on specific routes.
    • Emotional Support Dogs: Allowed free of charge on flights between Bangkok (BKK) and Los Angeles (LAX).

Always check your airline’s policy to ensure smooth, stress-free travel with your pet.
