Heavy Rain and Hail Hit Thailand Amid Summer Storm Warning

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) has issued its sixth warning for a summer storm expected to impact 46 provinces, including Bangkok. The storm brings heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and lightning in some areas, prompting authorities to urge residents to exercise caution.

The announcement, issued at 5 p.m. on March 6, details that northern, northeastern, and central Thailand, as well as Bangkok and its surrounding areas, will experience thunderstorms, strong winds, and sporadic hail. Lightning strikes are also possible. These weather conditions stem from a moderate high-pressure system moving in from China, affecting the northeastern region and the South China Sea, while hot to extremely hot temperatures persist over upper Thailand. Additionally, southerly and southeasterly winds are carrying moisture into these areas, intensifying storm activity.

In a previous statement, the TMD indicated that 40 provinces would be affected by severe weather. Residents in these areas are advised to avoid thunderstorms, open spaces, large trees, unstable structures, and billboards. Below is the list of provinces expected to be impacted:

March 7:

  • Northern region: Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun
  • Northeastern region: Chaiyaphum and Nakhon Ratchasima
  • Central region: Nakhon Sawan, Lopburi, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Songkhram, including Bangkok and its vicinity
  • Eastern region: Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat
  • Southern region: Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon

March 8:

  • Central region: Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Songkhram, including Bangkok and its vicinity
  • Eastern region: Chon Buri and Rayong
  • Southern region: Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through the TMD’s official website or contact their 24-hour hotline at 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours predicts summer storms in the northeastern, central, and eastern regions, with thunderstorms, lightning, and potentially damaging winds and hail. Upper Thailand will continue experiencing high temperatures, with extreme heat in certain central areas. Authorities advise residents to avoid travel through storm-affected regions and urge farmers to take precautions to protect their crops and livestock.
