Military Police Face Probe for Escorting Alleged Fraudster
BANGKOK — Two military police officers have been detained and face disciplinary measures after being caught escorting alleged fraudster Thanyatep Sirithapsadechakul in full uniform, raising alarm over abuse of power and political name-dropping.
Disciplinary Action
- The officers were observed leading Thanyatep’s motorcade, allegedly giving legitimacy to his claims of ties to political and police elites.
- Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed that their salaries have been slashed and pensions suspended.
- He issued a stern warning to civil officers against moonlighting inappropriately, such as working at bars or pubs, and said efforts are underway to raise low-ranking officers’ wages.
Fraud & Flight
- Thanyatep, 32, faces charges under the Computer Crime Act for inserting false data to deceive others.
- His fraudulent claims came to light after actress Rinyarat Watchararojsiri exposed his behavior during an attempted courtship.
- On April 7, Thanyatep leapt from the 3rd floor of Khok Khram Police Station in a failed escape attempt. He sustained no serious spinal injuries and was released from the hospital on April 10.
Legal Fallout
- He now faces multiple fraud charges dating back to 2021 and is currently held at Nonthaburi Provincial Prison.
- Further investigations are underway into possible lese majeste violations and unlawful use of royal decorations.
