59 Dead, 458 Injured in First Two Days of Songkran Holiday Road Accidents

BANGKOK, April 13, 2025 — The Road Safety Command Centre has reported a troubling start to this year’s Songkran Festival, with 59 fatalities and 458 injuries resulting from 460 road accidents nationwide during the first two days of the holiday period, April 11–12.

Key Causes and Trends

  • Speeding was the leading cause of accidents at 39.92%
  • Drunk driving followed at 22.18%
  • Dangerous overtaking accounted for 20.97%

Motorcycles were involved in 85.77% of all accidents. The majority occurred on:

  • Straight roads (83.87%)
  • Highways (40.32%)
  • Village roads (33.87%)

Peak accident times were reported between:

  • 6 a.m. – 9 a.m.
  • 3 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Most victims were aged 20 to 29 years old.

Provincial Breakdown

  • Mukdahan province had the highest number of accidents (23) and injuries (25)
  • Bangkok recorded the highest number of deaths (9)

Legal Action

The Department of Probation reported 1,363 cases entering probation due to traffic offenses. Among them, 15 individuals were ordered to wear electronic ankle bracelets for offenses including:

  • Driving under the influence
  • Reckless driving
  • Drinking alcohol while driving

Authorities continue to urge motorists to drive responsibly, especially as traffic volumes surge during the extended Songkran break, which runs through April 17.
