Passenger Bus Plunges Off Cliff in Sri Lanka, Killing 21 and Injuring 35
KOTMALE, Sri Lanka (AP) — A tragic bus accident in Sri Lanka’s central highlands has left 21 people dead and 35 others injured after a passenger bus skidded off a cliff early Sunday morning near the town of Kotmale, roughly 140 kilometers east of Colombo.
According to police spokesman Buddhika Manathunga, the bus was carrying nearly 50 passengers when it veered off a mountainous road and plunged into a ravine in the country’s tea-growing hill region.
Television footage showed the wreckage lying overturned at the bottom of the steep slope as rescue teams and bystanders worked to pull the injured from the debris. The driver, who was also injured, is among those being treated at a local hospital.
