Typhoon Ragasa is forecasted to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across Thailand from September 24 to 26, with a risk of flash floods and runoff. According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD)’s weather advisory no. 9 issued at 5 pm on Wednesday, the typhoon was located off the southern coast of Guangdong province, China, at latitude 21.5°N and longitude 111.8°E, with maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h.
The typhoon is moving westward at 20 km/h and is expected to pass through southern Guangdong and into the Gulf of Tonkin by September 25. It is projected to weaken into a tropical storm before reaching northern Vietnam.
The TMD stated that Typhoon Ragasa’s influence will strengthen the monsoon trough over northern and northeastern Thailand, as well as the southwest monsoon across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, from September 24 to 26. This will result in heavy rainfall in many parts of the North, Northeast, Central, and East, including Bangkok and nearby provinces.
The department cautioned the public to be prepared for heavy rainfall and potential flooding, especially in hillside areas, low-lying zones, and flood-prone regions, noting the possibility of flash floods, runoff, and riverbank overflow.
Strong winds and high waves are also expected in the upper Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, with waves reaching 2–3 meters, and exceeding 3 meters in storm-affected areas. Fishermen are advised to exercise caution and refrain from venturing out to sea from September 24 to 26.
The TMD urged the public to stay updated through official sources, such as their website or helplines at 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182 (available 24 hours), for the latest weather information.
