The Thai Expressway Authority (Exat) continues to face hurdles over its proposed east-west expressway linking Chalong Rat and Khae Rai, especially near Kasetsart University. Originally planned as a fully elevated four-lane road, opposition from residents and the university has delayed progress for over two decades.
In 2023, Exat proposed routing part of the expressway through an existing underpass, sparking concerns over toll charges. The agency assures tolls would only apply to drivers continuing onto Phase 2, not for those only using the underpass.
Phase 1, a 6.7 km elevated section, is awaiting government approval, with construction possible by 2026-2027. Phase 2, the 12.6 km stretch passing the university, remains stalled amid community resistance and legal questions, with critics arguing it would worsen congestion and environmental impacts.
Community opposition highlights the importance of public input. Local residents and university officials oppose the project, citing urban development principles and safety concerns. Political pressures are rising ahead of elections, but the project remains stuck between engineering challenges, community resistance, and political considerations.
