The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) has been instructed to speed up the rollout of a 40-baht flat fare for electric rail systems as part of efforts to ease living costs and advance the country’s rail network.
Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat, who oversees the DRT, said the agency is central to promoting rail as a main mode of transport, spanning double-track lines, high-speed rail and urban transit. He stressed that improving accessibility, safety and service quality is essential to meet public needs and enhance long-term transport efficiency.
As part of cost-of-living relief measures, the DRT has been told to fast-track the daily 40-baht flat fare scheme while also studying a zone-based pricing model to improve fare efficiency.
Safety remains a top priority, with strict standards required throughout both construction and operations. Machinery and equipment must undergo regular inspections, and major projects should carry comprehensive accident insurance to protect lives and property.
To support economic growth, the department has also been directed to accelerate disbursement of the 2026 budget and improve planning for the 2027 budget to ensure maximum public benefit.
Other key initiatives include improving rail freight efficiency and advancing the development of an Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district to help lower logistics costs.
For long-term sustainability, the DRT is tasked with creating a comprehensive transport master plan that ensures cost-effectiveness while encouraging private sector participation. It is also promoting the use of clean energy in rail systems to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, cut air pollution and tackle fine dust in line with national emissions reduction goals.
DRT director-general Pichet Kunadhamraks said the department is working with agencies both within and outside the ministry to drive the development of a modern, efficient and nationwide rail system.
