Krabi International Airport is attracting increasing attention from international airlines as new route proposals from Finland and Scandinavia are set to enhance tourism growth and support regional economic development, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Transport.
Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit said the ministry is actively implementing its Airport for Regional Development policy, which aims to transform regional airports into key drivers of tourism, connectivity and economic expansion beyond Bangkok.
As part of this strategy, the Department of Airports (DoA) recently participated in the 158th IATA Slot Conference held in Bangkok, where it showcased development plans and future expansion opportunities for Krabi Airport, Surat Thani Airport and other airports under its management.
Following the conference, 16 airlines expressed interest in holding discussions with the DoA regarding slot allocations and schedule adjustments at Krabi Airport to better align with their network strategies and fleet operations.
Among the most significant developments, two new international carriers have requested slots for direct flights to Krabi. Finnair plans to launch services between Helsinki and Krabi, while Scandinavian Airlines has proposed a direct connection between Copenhagen and Krabi.
Mr Phattrapong noted that these routes are expected to attract more high-value travellers from Nordic markets, including Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Visitors from these countries are known for longer stays and a strong interest in wellness and leisure tourism, further strengthening Krabi’s reputation as a preferred destination for Scandinavian travellers.
He added that continued growth from key markets such as India and the Middle East would provide additional benefits for local businesses, tourism operators and supporting industries throughout the region.
The growing interest from major international airlines also reflects confidence in Krabi Airport’s infrastructure, operational capabilities and readiness to accommodate increased international traffic.
DoA Director-General Danai Ruangsorn revealed that airlines have requested a total of 126 international flights for the 2026/27 winter schedule, which runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027.
The proposed schedule includes 14 airlines operating through Krabi Airport, consisting of 10 scheduled international carriers offering 98 weekly flights, along with four international charter operators. Both Finnair and Scandinavian Airlines are planning two return services per week.
Mr Danai also confirmed that discussions with other airlines have highlighted additional interest from Oman-based low-cost carrier Salam Air and China’s Lucky Air, which is preparing to launch services between Kunming and Udon Thani in September.
The Ministry of Transport believes that expanding international air connectivity will further strengthen regional tourism, create new economic opportunities and support sustainable long-term growth across southern Thailand.
