Air India unveils new livery

The updated logo and color scheme of Air India depict a bright and colorful new India on the international scene.

The new livery combines historic and modern design elements, with an homage to the airline’s past and future on the tail that displays a golden window edge.

This rebranding underlines Air India’s goal to establish itself as a top-tier airline that personifies Indian hospitality and raises the bar for customer care. In any industry, brand association is a powerful force, and the aviation sector is no exception. Early in 2021, the Tata Group privatized Air India with the goal of resurrecting the company as a premium airline that could compete with the best in the world. It made the most visible step in that direction today by revealing a brand-new livery and logo.

Greetings from the new Air India

The Maharaja emblem, the colors red and white, and the rising sun tail have long been used to identify Air India. All of that changed today, and Air India debuted its new hues of deep red, aubergine, and gold. The lettering is in a new “Air India Sans” font, and the window design’s edge has been changed to the “The Vista” emblem.

The new logo is a hybrid of the old and new, maintaining the color scheme but updating the design—a fitting comparison to Air India, which was once controlled by Tata as well. In keeping with its Indian heritage, the new Vista logo recreates the conventional “jharokha” motif that can be seen on all windows of modern aircraft.

The event was held earlier today in New Delhi with Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, airline CEO Cambell Wilson, and other top executives. It has been eagerly anticipated, and as Air India gets ready to receive the first of the 470 aircraft it has ordered, they will be flying in its new livery, forging a new connection for travelers both domestically and internationally. The airline made the following comment in a release: “The new design captures the essence of a bold new India, marking a milestone in the transformation of the national Indian institution into a national Indian and global inspiration.”

A livery

In relation to flying machines, a rebranding is incomplete without a new livery. Air India planes, which serve as the moving billboards for any airline, will now display its name on the belly and along the side of the fuselage in the new font. The carrier decided to apply the belly paint instead of keeping the Hindi translation on the side.

But the most striking feature is the tail. As a reference to the airline’s past and future, the tail has a combination of the golden window edge, recognizable red, and purple from Vistara. This color pattern is used throughout the remainder of the aircraft, with red wingtips and gold accents on the belly. In December, Air India will debut the livery, which will be shown on its first Airbus A350. The first new aircraft type for the carrier in more than ten years, this aircraft has been sighted performing tests at Airbus facilities on a number of occasions and will likely join the fleet in four months. Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD of Air India, stated,

We want to convert Air India into a top-tier airline that welcomes travelers from all over the world and that proudly represents a new India on the international stage. The new Air India is brash, self-assured, and bright, but it’s also incredibly friendly and firmly based in its long history and storied traditions, which make Indian hospitality the gold standard for hospitality around the world.

a significant action

While many people will miss the Maharaja and its place in Indian aviation history, it has become obvious that Air India needs to make a clean break with the past in order to go forward. From the logo to the tail, the new brand identity should represent the premium airline that India needs and deserves in the future. Things appear promising if only appearances serve as our only guide.
