AirAsia has signed a landmark agreement for 150 next-generation Airbus A220-300 aircraft, marking the largest single firm order ever placed for the A220 programme. The deal also pushes total firm orders for the aircraft family beyond the 1,000-aircraft milestone, further reinforcing the A220’s growing global market position in the narrow-body segment.
During the announcement, Tony Fernandes highlighted the airline group’s long-term confidence in the platform, while also expressing interest in a potential stretched variant, commonly referred to within the industry as the A220-500.
The order supports AirAsia’s continued fleet modernisation and regional expansion strategy, with the A220-300 expected to deliver improved fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and enhanced passenger comfort across short- and medium-haul routes throughout Asia-Pacific.
