All Nippon Airways flight to Bangkok hits turbulence with 2 crew members injured

All Nippon Airways bangkok one Feb 7 2024

Severe turbulence during a flight on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operated by All Nippon Airways (ANA) resulted in injury to two flight attendants. The incident occurred at approximately 28,000 feet altitude. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.

The incident took place on ANA flight 849 (NH-849) on January 31st. The aircraft, registered as JA899A, departed from Haneda Airport (HND) in Tokyo and was en route to Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok. The flight experienced turbulence while cruising at an altitude of around 28,000 feet. One flight attendant reportedly suffered a bone fracture as a result of the turbulence. Despite the incident, the flight continued its journey to Bangkok without diverting.

During the flight, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner experienced fluctuations in altitude. It climbed to 26,000 feet shortly after takeoff and remained at that altitude for nearly an hour. At around 01:46 JST, the aircraft ascended 900 feet in one minute, followed by another 700-foot climb a minute later, reaching 28,000 feet. A minute after that, the plane descended 1,300 feet to 26,700 feet and returned to the initial cruising altitude of 26,000 feet.

The severe turbulence and resulting injuries are believed to have occurred during the sudden ascent and descent. However, there were other altitude changes during the seven-hour flight. After returning to FL260, the aircraft climbed to 38,000 feet for five minutes before descending to 34,000 feet. It remained at FL340 for approximately 40 minutes before climbing to 40,000 feet, where it maintained its altitude for the remainder of the cruise. The flight ultimately landed safely at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) on Runway 01R at 05:29.

The injured flight attendants returned to Haneda Airport (HND) on the same day, but the injuries were only confirmed by Japan’s Ministry of Transport (JTSB) on Friday, two days after the incident. One flight attendant sustained serious injuries with a fractured bone after tripping during the turbulence, while the other reportedly scraped their leg against a cart.

The JTSB is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. There were a total of 257 passengers onboard the flight. Attempts to gather further information from ANA representatives have been made, but no immediate response has been received.
