AOT gives the green light for the expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport

The board of Airports of Thailand (AoT) has approved a master plan for a five-year expansion project at Suvarnabhumi Airport, slated to take place between 2025 and 2030.

AoT Director Kirati Kijmanawat announced on Sunday that the board approved the master plan during their meeting last Thursday, along with a budget of 170 million baht for hiring a consulting team for the project.

Mr. Kirati stated that the consultants will have eight months to assess the project’s feasibility. Following this evaluation, they will spend an additional 12 months detailing the project design, with bidding anticipated to commence by late next year or early 2026.

He indicated that the consultants will focus on prioritizing various components of the project, which include the West Expansion, South Expansion, North Expansion, and the construction of a new cargo facility.

Moreover, Mr. Kirati mentioned that the current government expects AoT to complete the South Expansion, which will be allocated a budget of 120 billion baht, within its term. As such, the organization must expedite the expansion process.

Highlighting the rapid growth of the air transport industry since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Kirati noted that AoT is prepared for the expansion, with land available south of Suvarnabhumi Airport ready for development. This land is conveniently connected to Bang Na-Trat Road and is equipped with necessary utilities, including an electrical system.

Additionally, he revealed that AoT will not require a loan for the significant budget needed for the project, as the company has regained liquidity due to the industry’s recovery. He expressed confidence in being able to fund the expansion project through annual earnings, citing the anticipated continued growth of the industry.

“As the construction project will span about five years, I am confident that it will not impact AoT’s liquidity or situation,” he said.

Mr. Kirati also provided an update on the expansion plans for Don Mueang Airport, stating that the design phase is currently underway and is expected to be completed by November.
