During a joint press briefing at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin, Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin disclosed the country’s quest for Germany’s backing in its pursuit to become a member of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

In discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Mr. Scholz emphasized Germany’s keenness in reinforcing connections, specifically in economic collaborations with Southeast Asian nations. The progression of bilateral trade between Thailand and Germany by over 20% was noted. Furthermore, Germany expressed willingness to explore support for Thailand’s OECD membership bid, which could facilitate negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union.

Prime Minister Srettha articulated expectations for joint efforts geared towards advancing mutual trade and investments via a potential Thai-EU FTA. Additionally, he sought Germany’s support for Thailand’s OECD application and endeavors to secure visa-free travel agreements with European nations in the Schengen area.

Mr. Srettha reiterated Thailand’s dedication to enhance political, economic, and social stability through consistent adherence to transparent and rule-based democratic protocols, aiming to instill confidence in Germany and other partners.

Both leaders concurred on the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, with detailed discussions underway through an existing dialogue mechanism.

The envisioned strategic partnership intends to foster comprehensive cooperation between Thailand and Germany, including regional engagements with ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific zone, advancing sustainable development collaborations to tackle contemporary challenges.

Acknowledging the importance of clean energy initiatives, the leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in solar, wind, and water power generation, emphasizing green hydrogen advancements. Collaboration in electric vehicles, encompassing EV manufacturing, technological exchanges, and industry promotion, was also underscored. Prime Minister Srettha affirmed the Thai government’s commitment to supporting Germany’s investments in conventional engine manufacturing and hybrid vehicle sectors.
