Bangkok conducted its first farmers’ market on Saturday.

The market’s inauguration ceremony was attended by Sanon Wangsrangboon, a deputy governor of Bangkok, and it will be open every weekend from 6 am to 11 am to sell local farmers’ food, processed goods, and health products.

Local specialties from adjacent neighborhoods like Khlong Sam Wa, Wang Thong Lang, Prawet, Lat Phrao, Bueng Kum, and Bang Kapi will also be sold at the market.

For every 100 baht spent by customers at the market, vegetable seeds were given out, according to Sanon. As of the time of publication, more than 300 seedlings of garden vegetables, including sweet basil, eggplant, and bird’s eye chillies, had been provided.According to the deputy governor, the Department of Social Development has already narrowed down its list of potential locations for farmers’ markets to three: Chatuchak Park, Vachirabenjatas Park (Suan Rot Fai), and Lumpini Park.Farmers’ markets help the local economies while also giving Bangkokians quick access to high-quality organic goods, according to Sanon.

The project also encourages organic farming at more than 200 places across the city, allowing residents to grow their own veggies to save money and donate the surplus to nonprofit organizations and educational institutions.A strategy has been established by the governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, to set up farmers’ markets in each of the city’s 50 districts so that local farmers can sell their goods directly to customers without the use of intermediaries.

45 district offices and organizations in charge of 12 public parks have so far consented to host farmers’ markets.
