Bangkok gems and jewellery fair expected to generate Bt5bn-plus

Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, director-general of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) of the Commerce Ministry, gave the glittering 68th Gems and Jewellery Fair in Thailand its formal opening this week.

The show, which is being co-hosted by DITP and the Gem and Jewellery Institute of Thailand (GIT) from September 6 to 10, is being held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC) with assistance from 15 public and private trade agencies.

This year’s fair sees more than 1,000 firms take part. “It has always attracted exceptional enthusiasm from both exhibitors and visitors,” according to Phusit.

The expo spans 2,400 booths in Halls 1 through 8 of the QSNCC. It is anticipated to draw more than 30,000 buyers, importers and tourists from around the world and is on track to bring in more than Bt3bn in revenue, according to the DITP director-general.

The Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair is among the top five largest trade fairs in the industry worldwide and one of Asia’s most renowned events of its type.

The exhibition was significant in boosting Thailand’s exports of gems and jewellery, which are important to the country’s economy.

Thailand’s prominence as a major regional centre for the trade of gems and jewellery, together with its proficiency in the polishing of coloured gemstones and craftsmanship, have all been significant factors in the success of the sector.

Gems and jewellery were the ninth-largest export for the nation in 2022, bringing in approximately US$8 billion (Bt284bn) in revenue. It is expected to grow by 10% more this year.

The quality of Thailand’s gem and jewellery industry over the past 40 years is displayed in one of the primary exhibits, “The Magnificent 40-Year Journey of Brilliance,” according to GIT director Sumed Prasongpongchai.

“‘The Jewellers’ is another outstanding exhibit, and the ‘New Faces’ zone offers a venue for up-and-coming businesspeople to showcase their creative and exciting works. A number of seminars covering the technical and marketing elements of the sector are also available to visitors.”
