Bangkok Raids Uncover Hazardous Counterfeit Cosmetics Smuggled from China
BANGKOK, Thailand — Authorities have seized over 34,000 counterfeit perfume products smuggled from China during a coordinated raid on five warehouses in Bangkok, according to the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD). The haul is valued at 4.3 million baht.
Pol Maj Gen Pattanasak Bupphasuwan, commander of the CPPD, announced Sunday that the raids took place on Saturday in the Rat Burana and Bukkhalo districts. The operation was the result of a weeks-long investigation tracing the source of illegal cosmetics and fragrances sold in Thailand.
Major Seizure and Smuggling Network Exposed
A total of 34,806 fake perfume items, mimicking well-known international brands, were confiscated. The counterfeit products were discovered in rented warehouses, where they had been hidden to avoid detection.
The raid followed the earlier arrest of a Thai vendor selling illegal cosmetics. Investigation into the vendor’s supply chain revealed a Chinese financier orchestrating the smuggling operation. Authorities said the financier used Cambodian nationals’ mule bank accounts to launder money from the illegal trade.
Public Health Warnings Issued
Pol Maj Gen Pattanasak emphasized the serious health risks posed by such counterfeit cosmetics. Adverse effects can include:
- Skin irritation
- Respiratory problems
- Nasal inflammation
- Rashes
- High blood pressure
- Dizziness, nausea, and vomiting
He warned consumers to be cautious when purchasing personal care products and to verify sources.
Next Steps
Authorities are continuing their investigation to locate additional suspects and to dismantle the broader smuggling network. Legal proceedings are expected to follow against those involved in the distribution and sale of the counterfeit goods.
